Adding a little Spring!

Grow some grass indoors!

Tired of seeing dirty snow and lifeless lawns? Here's a way to add some spring into your day and a fun activity to do with kids!

How to plant grass in a pot:

Things You'll Need

Clay pots
Potting soil
Grass seed of your choice
(Fescue seed works well because it grows fast)
Gravel or twigs

Step 1

Cover the bottom of your clay pot with a fine layer of gravel or twigs for drainage.

Step 2

Mix the potting soil with an organic mulch, then fill the pot to about 1/2 inch below the rim.

Step 3

Sprinkle the grass seeds on top of the soil. Do not press them down into the soil. Cover the soil liberally---you should not see much space between the seeds.

Step 4

Cover the seeds with damp coffee filters. (This will help them germinate and keep birds from eating them, if you are keeping your clay pot outside.)

Step 5

Place the seeds in a warm, sunny location. Keep them covered with the moist coffee filters. Once the seeds have germinated (sprouted), which should take three or four days, uncover them and keep the soil moist but not soggy. Trim the grass with scissors as needed.

Tips

Grass can be grown indoors. Simple place your clay pot on a sunny window sill and watch the grass grow!
